Yangon, Myanmar
Myanmar sits
at the crossroads of India and China, and looks out onto the
vast Indian Ocean next to Thailand. One of the largest and
most diverse countries in South East Asia, Myanmar stretches
from the Andaman Sea into the Eastern Himalayan mountain
range.
A country
abundant in natural resources, Myanmar's history evolves
around competing forces, mainly the British, who sought to
monopolize the teak trade. The former Burma was first
annexed by Britain in 1886, but gained independence on
January 4, 1948.
Myanmar has in
the last few decades, been regarded as a place of mystery
and legend filled with beauty and wonderment, yet only just
emerging into the modern world.
Virgin
jungles, snow-capped mountains, pristine beaches; combined
with a rich and glorious heritage of more than two thousand
years, allow visitors to embrace all the traditions of Asia
in one fascinating country. Spectacular monuments and
ancient cities attest to a vibrant culture that is still
home to 135 different ethnic groups.
Yangon is the
cosmopolitan capital city of Myanmar, and still maintains
its colonial charm with tree-lined avenues, tranquil lakes,
legendary pagodas and gracious turn-of-the-century
architecture. The interesting mix of British colonialism and
Myanmar Buddhism has shaped the city's unique culture and
environment.
International
flights to Yangon, supported by Myanmar Airways and Silk Air
are from Bangkok, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and
Singapore. Internal flights between cities may be arranged
through the local carriers, Air Mandalay and Yangon Airways |
